August 2006
Community Inclusion Through Technology International (The CITTI Project) just completed an amazing two week information exchange with partner disability-related organizations in the province of Tungurahua, Ecuador. The CITTI Project builds capacity in developing countries to use assistive technology.. The collaboration with teachers, therapists, and parents are still fresh in our minds. We can still feel the warm hugs from the children.
Two weeks after our return, the Tungurahua volcano erupted. Thousands were evacuated. Those affected include the communities and organizations we recently worked with in Quero, Ambato, San Miguel de Salcedo, and Salasaca. Huambalò, where the CITTI project worked daily with children, families, and educators, nestles on the side of the volcano. It was showered with ash and volcanic rocks. Crops were destroyed, water was polluted and animals had no forage. The lives of many were changed. Needs are for food, temporary shelters, protective masks, clean water and hope. Once more, we are challenged to share.
A Volcano Relief Fund has been established through the CITTI Project to meet this challenge. Funds contributed to the CITTI Project through September 30, 2006 will directly support families and individuals through our partner organizations in Ecuador. Write your tax deductible check to our sponsor, Foundation for Sustainable Development, designating your funds to the "Relief Fund" in the memo line.
On behalf of our friends in Ecuador, thank you for your support.
